The users guide to physical computer Security

Cable systems

Cable systems are designed to be both flexible and easy to use. They are designed to be the first defence against theft and unauthorised movement of PC’s, their components and peripherals.

A cable system is made up of several components, some of which do not have to be used, however a good cable system should offer protection to not only the base (CPU) unit but also the monitor, keyboard, mouse and headset.

The system that is on offer to you comes in component form and may be ordered as individual items or as complete kits. The length of the cables is one of individual choice.

The components that make up a system are as follows

The Secure point,

A location where the cable is attached to usually a table leg, radiator (not copper piping ,it breaks) or other permanent wall or floor fixtures. If these are not available we a have 2 types of secure points you may include in your systems design with fixing kits for either desk top, wall mounting or floor mounting.

The CPU (base unit) Secure point

The base unit may be secured in several ways the most common method is to use glue plates on a suitable location on the base unit (see glue plates). However for those who do not wish to disfigure or permanently attach a fixture to the CPU, a spare expansion slot can be utilised with an expansion slot bracket. This bracket is reusable and is electrically insulated.

The Monitor

There are 2 basic type of monitor, the flat screen and the standard monitor, If the monitor has a permanently attached video lead this may be used with a monitor trap. If not then glue plates may used. For flat screens we now have available a special reusable secure stand.

Keyboards, mice and headsets

These items although relatively inexpensive without them, the lose of productivity and the frustration and stress of employees or students should not be underestimated, particularly as securing these items is very inexpensive.

The Cable

The core of the system is the cable, it comes in 3 sizes with a variety of ends, these are 4mm, 6mm and 9mm, all with plastic coating. The ends that are available are soft eyes (loops), secure ends solid metal ends for padlocks or dead ends. The 4mm cable is usually used for asset control, the 6mm for standard security and the 9mm for heavy duty security, where a steel enclosure is not an option.

Glue plates

Glue plates are part of the system that can be used in most places, on monitors, CPU’s, printers scanners and all other peripherals. Double sided sticky foam pads can be used on most plates or a 2 part glue for extra strength.

Padlocks

The final part of the system is the locking method, most commonly used is the 30mm padlock although larger and smaller sizes are available. It is also advisable to use keyed alike locks where the system manager would hold the key for all the padlocks. The saving in key management time is not to be underestimated.

Asset Control Kits

Sold in component form these kits consist of 4mm cable with soft eyes and economy padlock and 75mm square plates that may have either foam pads for attachment of glue.

Secure enclosures

Secure enclosures are made from 3mm steel plate, type 1‘s are secured using a 7 lever safe lock in a door and available in desktop or tower configurations. These are considered the top of the range and can be made to colour match furniture so that they become all but invisible. A version known as the type 3 is also available It has removable stainless steel bars at the front.

The type 5 enclosure is the economy version of secure enclosures. As secure as the type 1 and 3’s but secured with a 7 pin block lock, which can be keyed alike.
